Here at myBaker, we’re passionate about cake. This week, we decided to look at cakes for a more unusual audience - dogs!

It is no secret that most of us love our pets like children, so the rising trend of making them a baked treat comes with little surprise. Cakes and baked goods for dogs are fast becoming a popular way to show your pooch some love. Here we explain a little about the do’s and don’ts of dog cakes, and have included a few recipes for you to try out.

Important things to remember

  1. Chocolate is the most common ingredient that should NOT be included in a dog cake. Other processed ingredients like dairy products, fruits such as cherries and apples, sugar, salt, and some nuts e.g. macadamia should also be avoided.

  2. According to nutritionists, dogs do not have enzymes in their blood to break down any fats that solidify when they are cold. So, it would not be advisable for them to eat any butter or lard. As a replacement, it is recommended that vegetable or coconut oil be used.

  3. When making your dog a cake, avoid refined sugars and artificial sweeteners. Instead use a small amount of honey or banana for sweetness and extra fibre.

Want to throw your pup a party? Look no further than this Banana and Carob Oat Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting! It will go down a

treat with your pooch and his pals. With a delicious chocolate flavour from the carob, topped with peanut butter it will be a firm favourite. Even better, surround the cake with dog bone biscuits – it will make the cake a party showstopper and an even bigger treat for your dog!

‘Pupcakes’ - these Doggy Cupcakes contain no oil, instead the recipe opts for apple sauce (stewed, pureed apples), to both sweeten and bind the ingredients. Peanut butter is also a staple of the recipe, a tasty treat which dogs absolutely love.

Just a little more dense and sweet than regular muffins, if you don’t top with dog treats they can also be a healthy human friendly snack!
